History of Sky Sports

 SKY Sports History:

-         1989- SKY TV launches at 6pm. Eurosport is the only sports channel on there.

-         1990- Sky one broadcasts the first overseas live coverage of England Cricket team’s game against the West Indies.

-         Sky Movies broadcast boxing match of Mike Tyson V Buster Douglas. First pay per view channel.

-         Sky Sports becomes a pay channel in 1992.

-         Sky and BSB merge, called BSKYB.

-         Sky Sports channel in 1991

-         Premier League brought in 1992 for £304M

-         16 AUG 1992- Super Sunday launched to celebrate PL

-         17th AUG 1992- MNF launches

-         Signs deal with newly formed World Darts Council, broadcasts PDC (Professional Darts Cooperation)

-         1993 begins live coverage of the US PGA Golf

-         1994- SKY Sport 2 channel launches

-         1995 starts coverage of the NFL and Rugby Union

-         June 1996- first coverage of women’s golf and cricket

-         Sky Sports renamed Sky Sports 1

-         1998 Sky Sports News launched

-         1999- Grand National coverage

-          2002- F1 coverage

-         2003- UCL games shown for first time

-         2008- FA cup football for first time

-         2010- Sky Sports 4HD Launches

-         2010- Sky Sports News removed from Freeview

-         2011- Master’s Tournament shown for first time

-         2012- Sky F1 Launches

-         2015- sky stops broadcasting UCL games

-         2016- First Event in UHD

-         2017- Sky makes specific channels for specific sports.

-         2019- NBA returns to Sky

-         2020- PL matches split with Prime, BT and Sky due to Covid-19

-         2021- Bundesliga rights acquired

2022- UHD channel launched
